In 1963, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) deemed it safe for U.S.A. citizens to consume foods irradiated by gamma rays, and x-rays. The FDA compiled scientific studies from around the world to bolster their case for irradiating dried grains, meat, eggs, and some vegetables. Unfortunately these studies gave neither comprehensive or longditudinal significance to the data. The FDA planned to listen to feedback from physicians whose patients developed trouble from ingesting irradiated food. Unfortunately this type of data collection method is flawed. This makes the summary statistics such as means, variances, etc. flawed and so no scientific models, let alone inferences, can be considered worthwhile. Didn't the FDA have statisticians and biologists on their payroll?
In 2003, the European Scientific Committee on Food (ESCF) reversed its position on irradiated food. The ESCF would not endorse any food irradiated with more than 10 kGrys. The FDA seems to ignore such studies, and especially contentious issues with evidence.
The FDA has tried to explain its rules for irradiating foods. Unfortunately the FDA explanations have not been clear. For example, the maximum dose of radiation food is exposed to is measured in KiloGrays (kGys). Since no context is provided for such a measure how can researchers or the public relate to or interpret kGys? Are kGys linearly related? Is 1 kGy one tenth as potent as 10 kGys? The international symbol for irradiation is called the radura. But what is the radura's exact relationship to the kGry?
In 2005, Forbes Magazine business writers suggested a 5 point list to fix the FDA. To date (2008) the FDA has largely ignored that offering.
The message for Federal and State legislators, should be FIX THE FDA, and for consumers should be DO NOT EAT FOOD that has been irradiated regardless of how many kGys used. Also, ask in restaurants if the food has been irradiated. It must be noted, for your immediate safety, that the FDA has changed its rules to allow food processors and sellers to change their package label wording to read "pasteurize" in place of "irradiate". This is a huge deception and cover-up. The FDA has run amok! The FDA's first task is public safety, for pharmaceutical products and food. FDA: Just do it!
